DESCRIPTION

This light installation was commissioned by the City of Reggio Emilia, the place where the national flag was born, in occasion of the 150^th Anniversary of the Italian Unification.

The concept proposed by young architects Ivan Pecorari and Giovanni Giacomelli was from the beginning an object that looked particularly representative of the idea of a Nation, where individuals are joined together by a common, universal vision and same ideals: a number of lights woven in a geometrical soft net hung above people’s heads, kind of a starry floating sky set in an urban environment and continuously changing, forming fragile waves and ephemeral constellations.

The waving effect was given by three helium-filled balloons positioned at an height of 6m that partially bore the leds net, while two steel wires hung the heavy parts of the net (stiffing angles, feeding wires) onto walls, covering a width of 12m.

The led luminaire used in the netting were originally furnished in 50 mts rows, they were hand-woven in 50x50cm squares to get a structure measuring 8x8m totally. A particular attention was used in the choice of light temperature: in order not to have a blueish and aggressive hue, inappropriate for an historical environment,  medium intensity warm white luminaire (2700°K) were chosen.

Three Par luminaire mounted by the central arch of the main building completed the composition by projecting the national flag’s colors onto the balloons’ surface.
